Traveling alone with 6-month old - planes and buses!?

I will be flying alone with my 6-month old, and then taking a 2-hour busride after the flight. Is it really realistic to think I can carry the baby, diaper bag, purse, checked luggage, and an umbrella stroller all on my own??
When does a mom go to the bathroom on a flight? Does the stewardess hold the baby? Has anyone else done something like this and lived to tell the tale? I've flown before with the baby, but not alone. I'm most worried how to carry all this stuff - I'm kind of relying on the generosity of my fellow man/woman.

As a former flight attendant and mom of one with another on the way...I feel your pain. I started traveling alone with my son when he was only 8 weeks old. I checked as much as I could, but I had his carseat, his stroller, and his diaper bag. I would advise you forget bringing a purse (pack it) and possibly forget your diaper bag (pack the actual bag). What has worked well for me is a backpack. I put all the diaper bag supplies in it as well as my purse necessities. That way I have essentially combined two bags into one, and it is a bag you can put on your back, leaving your hands free. When walking through the airport and bus depot you put your baby in the stroller. The stroller can either be gate checked or hung up in the plane closet depending upon what type of plane you're on. If you're on a small regional plane, le them valet check it planeside, then you don't worry about it until you get off the plane at your final destination. As for mommies going potty on the plane and/or bus...you can ask the flight attendant to help you out, but don't be surprised if they say no. When I flew, I helped moms out as much as I could. Many passengers are quick to help a woman traveling with a child..and then some are not..it all depends. There have been times I have had to put on my most pitiful pearl face to get a gentleman to help me, lol. If you have to, take your baby to the bathroom with you, and go as quickly as you can! You could also ask for a seat close to the lavatory so you can run in and run out (if you have the baby in a carseat).
