Same situation, sold-out cross-country flight, only three seats available. You will be stuck with your seatmate for at least 4 hours. Who would you rather sit by:

1. Tommy the Tantrum-Throwing Toddler and his mom, Indulgent Isabel (who says things like "oh, he's just expressing himself" and "Tommy, honey, would you like to stop kicking the seat in front of you?").

2. Airsick Annie, who is already green around the gills and the plane is still on the ground. She's already wrapped in a fetal position around her airsick bag.

3. Evangelical Elmer. He's chatty and belongs to a religion that's not yours, and he is determined to convert you before you reach your destination.

Definitely Elmer.I can sleep through anything so would probably snore through his conversion attempts.
I've been next to the airsick Annie before and luckily they usually only briefly experience the problem but it doesnt do much for your appetite when they start passing around the snacks.
Just recently had the Tantrum throwing toddler behind us on a flight to New York. My husband finally threatened to beat the hell out of him and his mother if she didnt control him. Others sitting by us applauded. Surprisingly he calmed down after that and mom took a little more interest in his behavior.
