You are allowed one carry-on item and one personal item (on most airlines). Your purse is considered a personal item, and your laptop bag is also considered a carry-on item - so you may take both of these items on board (be sure to stay within the limits to reduce hassle).

To give you an idea, the small roller bags qualify as carry-on baggage, and theyre quite a bit larger than a laptop bag. Just make sure that you're within the weight limit, Austrian airlines gave me grief for that once!

I fly about 4 times a year internationally and 2 or 3 times domestically, and I usually take a laptop bag and a small stroller onto the plane as my carry-on and I've never been asked to check anything in. Just make sure that if you do that, the laptop bag has a laptop, and a few extra simple items at most.
