School Uniform Policies

Myth 1. "They keep the kids from picking on each others economic status"

WRONG! Most schools don't care where you get the uniforms so now the kids say, "My mom got mine at the GAP you got yours from Walmart" or "My mom drives a better car than yours" or "My dads a lawyer you don't have a dad so you're poor." Kids will ALWAYS try to find new ways to make each other feel bad.

Myth 2. "Uniforms make it easier for the kids to get dressed in the morning".

WRONG! Most students are so against the uniform that it is MORE of a struggle to get them dressed and out the door than ever.

Myth 3. "School uniforms save parents money"

WRONG! For those parents that shop in thrift shops it is not cheaper and more and more parents are doing this especially in the "better area" shops. AND the uniforms get ruined just like anything else and need replacing at the same rate.

Myth 4. "Some kids use baggy cloths to hide weapons and drugs."

WRONG! You don't need baggy clothes to hide anything, people hide things in all kinds of places e.g. shoes, jacket pockets, rip in hidden areas of bags and pockets.

Myth 5. "School is in the 'business' of learning. School is the place where the next lawyers, bankers, CPA's and Doctors are given the fundamentals of working in this economy. One of the basics of our culture in the working world is conservative dressing, dress code, or even uniforms. "

WRONG! First, they are children, not little adults, they have plenty of time to learn "adult" ways, next: janitors, mechanics, and food prep people wear them not just the "high careers of society". School should be a relaxed learning environment, not a Russian boot camp as it is a proven fact children learn better in comfortable environments.

Myth 6. "Uniforms make it easy to identify kids who belong in the school and those that don't"

WRONG! How hard is it to change your shirt if there is something you're after?

Myth 7. "School Uniforms should be up to the school administration."

WRONG! school uniforms should be up the the people wearing them and up to the people paying for them. We shouldn't be dictated to on how to dress now, what's next being told how to breath or walk or maybe how to swallow?

All in all, Children don't have many choices to make and wearing what they want to (within reason) is only one of a hand full that they do get to choose.

...and It can also be a Student Safety issue. "For example: During a natural disaster (God Forbid) Earthquake, Tornado, etc,... How would a Parent I.D. their child? By the clothes that they were wearing, when they left home. What if a Senior decided to attack a 9th -or- 10th grade student. How would the victim describe the attacker? Let's see, Khaki Pants - Navy Blue Shirt - Brown Shoes. You get the picture"

...also "School is also the place where the next actors, writers, artists, politicians, inventors, designers and and musicians are trained. School uniforms send a clear early-life message to students that conformity is
important and creativity is not, that authority is allowed to abuse it's power and constrain our constitutional right to free speech and expression. Students learn from uniforms that their individuality,
political opinions and religious rights are unimportant, as is their education: students are regularly suspended for non compliance to the uniform code even if their school work is excellent. If
uniform-requiring schools were actually in 'the business of learning' this would not occur."

..last but not least "School uniforms will do nothing but cut down on a students individuality. A uniform is not the way to cut down on school violence. the only thing that will cut down on school violence is if parents would pay attention to their children and keep their children out of trouble and give them consequences when they disobey and not to let them run wild"
