1.5 year old's lips and hands turned blue ?

i baby sit for a 1.5 year old little boy. last week he was sick ( had the runs for over a week) and the last couple of days he had and on and off fever avg. about 100-101 f . today after he ate a huge lunch i laid him down to change his diaper and noticed that his lips and hands were turning dark purplish , blue and then his breathing started to sound a little like he had bad chest congestion ( but he doesn't ) . he never acted any different then normal but i stood him up right away (thinking it had something to do with him laying on his back) and about 30 sec. later the breathing sound stopped and his color got better. i called his parents asap, and everything seems normal with him but i was just wondering why this would happen. ( i am a mother of 2 and never had this happen to my girls)

This child must be seen by a doctor before you look after him again.

This is for two reasons.

1. Turning blue is a symptom of lack of oxygen which may be due to any number of things any or all of which are life threatening. So for the baby's sake, even if he appears better now, he must be checked for the underlying problem.

2. Secondly, if anything happens to this baby while he is in yor care YOU are liable. In particular, if (God forbid) he was to die as a result of this condition and you (being aware of it) had failed to ensure that he was treated, could be held criminally responsible for his death.

I don't mean to be alarmist but we are talking about a child's life here.

PLEASE get him seen as soon as possible.
