is 3 1/2 months too early for a baby to self soothe?

He sometimes cries at bed time when he has already been fed, has a clean nappy and been burped, then i pick him up and he stops crying, & i can see he is very tired, so i think he does it for attention and i end up rocking him to sleep for about 20-30 min. Is it too early to try and get him to get himself to sleep?

I started to let my son self soothe around 3 months. This involved letting him fuss for just a couple of minutes. If he started crying (true crying not just calling out) I'd pick him up and comfort him until he stopped and then put him back down awake. Now at 4.5 months I will actually let him cry but I watch the clock and 3 mins is my max. Usually when I go back in after 3 mins of crying all I have to do is pop his pacifier back into his mouth and he "almost" always settles right down. Sometimes we need to repeat this 2 or 3 times, sometimes he goes right down without any crying.....I think overall he is learning about sleep time. Its definitely better now than it was 2 months ago - rocking and carrying for 45 mins. everytime he woke up. He sleeps for longer chunks now too. A good bedtime routine is a must - let them know what's coming and they get themselves ready for "sleepy time"

Essential Items in Your Nappy Bag

To be truly organised, your nappy bag needs to have more than just spare nappies in it. You will need the makings of a bottle or two, depending on how long you expect to be out for. To be truly independent, take two small thermoses, one with boiling and one with cool, boiled water. You can them mix them to get the right temperature, add a pre-measured amount of formula and baby is taken care of.

If baby is up to the eating stage, a small jar of baby food and some plastic spoons will be needed. The jar can be resealed and the spoon can go in the bin after feeding time. Add a couple of sealed snacks and a small bottle of water for yourself in case you had to dash out without brekky. With all these items that nappy bag can get heavy so using a backpack will save wearing out one shoulder and free your hands.
