What do you think of my poem?

"A Million Souls"

The American soldier stood upon the dusty earth,
Fallen to his knees, eerie in silence.
The dark clouds augmented, holding back their tears,
Watching over the hushed land, waiting.

The man stared out before him,
His flesh coated in the earth’s dust,
The blood of his fellow soldiers,
The blood of the enemy,
The guilt of murder.

But his eyes did not flinch,
As his heart did not falter,
And with each beat from within,
His sins grew heavy upon his back.

The land was home to death,
Consuming victims into his wretched jaws,
Crushing pride and hope from the surviving,
Leaving a silence unbearable to the deaf.

Under the clouds’ gaze, the soldier rose.
Clutching the American flag, he trudged on,
Trudged onto where a million souls had perished.
The flag’s worn cloth whipped in the wind,
And the cloud’s began to weep.

i'm going to go out there and actually critique this poem rather than just saying "wonderful," if you don't mind.

it's interesting. it's a bit hard to follow at some points, because i wondered at first if the soldier on his knees was a different man than "The man" in the second stanza. you could maybe clarify this by just using "He" instead of "the man" (and then you might have to actually reword that whole line so it's not 'he stared out before him' - maybe 'he stared straight ahead' or something?) because, if it's just the one guy, the reader can imply he's the same guy as the soldier on his knees, you know?

Other nit-picky problems: you repetitively use a lot of unnecessary "filler" words. example, the word "the." look at a stanza when i take out a bunch of fillers:
He stared straight ahead,
flesh coated in earthen dust,
blood of fellow soldiers,
blood of enemies.
Guilt of murder.

You could maybe even mess with line breaks, maybe use some enjambment like:
blood of enemies, guilt
of murder.

I dunno. But do you get what I mean about the filler words? They don't really do anything for them poem other than clutter it.

also, you use the same words a lot: earth, dust, trudged. maybe get some new ones, find some more fresh descriptions, you know?

Overall, I think it's a really good poem with lots of potential, or I wouldn't have wasted my time writing all this. Good luck with it =]] peace
