The New York Times has hailed renowned historian and social commentator Simon Schama as a writer who "entwine[s] past and present into a meaningful, continuous whole." His deeply thoughtful and vastly knowledgeable books such as The Power of Art, The American Future, and the National Book Critics Circle Award finalist Rough Crossings have won acclaim for their intellectually rich and entertaining studies of the individuals and influences that have shaped the human condition, from the French Revolution to the political past and future of America, from the power of art to the role of nature in Western civilization. Now, in this passionate and provocative collection, this brilliant observer brings his keen critical sensibility to a wide range of topics, both broad and intimate. Captivating and informative, Scribble, Scribble, Scribble offers a lighter, playful Simon Schama on a diverse range of subjects, from food and family to Winston Churchill, from Martin Scorsese and Richard Avedon to Rubens and Rembrandt, from his travels in Brazil and Amsterdam to New Orleans and Katrina. This selection of essays—originally published in magazines and newspapers including the New Yorker, Vogue, the New York Review of Books, and the Guardian—is a treasure trove of surprises that highlight Schama`s sense of humor, curiosity, and idiosyncrasies. Never predictable, always stimulating, Scribble, Scribble, Scribble allows us to view the world, in all its diversity, through the eyes of one of its most intelligent, witty, and original inhabitants.

Fans of Simon Schama (art historian, professor, host of several productions for PBS, History Channel, the BBC, and prolific writer of books, magazine articles, and television documentaries) will not be surprised by the wide range of interests, styles, and approaches he displays in this collection. Others may find it daunting, like an overly impressive wedding buffet. There are pieces on politics (the slave trade, Churchill`s speeches), celebrities (Martin Scorsese, Charlotte Rampling), art (Flemish), food (Bolognese sauce, ice cream), travel (a trip on the Queen Mary 2), and many more. Schama`s writing is almost always vivid and fresh, regardless of subject, and readers--unlike wedding guests--can sample at a leisurely pace to avoid the feeling of being stuffed.

Five Iphone Apps For Working Mums

If you have an iPhone, then, like me, you probably wonder how you ever managed without it! However, if you're also a working mum searching for apps that enhance your life, you've probably found that the sheer number of apps available can make it quite difficult to find the right ones for your life.

Other manufacturers are struggling to keep up with the popularity of the iPhone and much of its dominance appears to be associated with the sheer number of applications that we can enjoy.

An iPhone can become a working mums's virtual Girl Friday with so many ways to support our busy lives and increase our efficiency! These are the apps that no working mum with an iPhone should miss out on.

If you have a new arrival, consider Baby Brain. This iPhone app allows you to log and track breast-feeding, diaper changes, sleeping patterns. It's rather easy to set up and you can just tap the screen when an event starts and ends, as you record according to configured parameters. When you are breast-feeding, you can easily look and see which side baby fed from last! The app even has a timer which will alert you when you are breast-feeding; if for example you are working on a project at the same time.

This one is ideal if you are working to a budget - ShoppingPal prompts you to take a picture of an item that you might have your eye on, type in a few details - maybe the price, the size or other important details, and save for future use. Now when you comparison shop you don't have to rely on your memory or rush back and forth between stores, trying to make up your mind. You know how stressful this can all be if you have kids in tow or have little time to spend anyway as you balance family issues with your work.

Creative minds abound in the world of iPhone application development. Put your IPhone next to your baby when he is sleeping. You can set a sound sensitivity level and if the noise from your sleeping baby dips below this, your iPhone will call you on a number you have defined. Baby Phone Deluxe works great as a baby monitor.

How about Scribble Lite if you are on a road trip? This app is a bit like the Etch-a-Sketch toys from the 1960s, and gives your kids a virtual easel on which to draw and paint. Just give your iPhone a shake and the screen is clean again.

Kindle for iPhone allows you to download full-length books and read when you have time. You don't have to worry about lugging around textbooks, or those books that you have to "absorb" yourself in for a work project. These apps allow you to pick the work up and put it down whenever you need to, inserting a virtual place-holder wherever you pause.

Isn't it great how technology can help to make the life of a working mum easier? Consider also specific coaching for women as professional coaching becomes more and more popular. If you have never considered online life coaching before, you will be amazed how it can make you even more productive.
