What should I do with my wagon wheel furniture?

I have wagon wheel furniture (couch and 2 chairs) that looks very similar to the one found here:

Five years in the future the furniture will probably be in a den or basement, but now it is our only living room furniture and can't get rid of it because of the sentimental value.

What can I do to this furniture so it doesn't scream "wagon wheel" quite so loudly. Stain it a darker color? Buy new cushions to replace the burgundy naugahyde ones? What color/fabric should the new cushions be? I'm moving to a new place that has a fancy marble fireplace in the living room and this wagon wheel furniture just doesn't match.

stain it darker ... then go get some foam board...

Take the foam board... cut it to the size needed to cover the inside part of the 'wagon wheel and the outside of the wagon wheel.

Cover the whole things with batting to cushion it.
Stretch some material over it... you should end up with an apolstered board for the inside and outside arm of the chair.

Then use some velcro on the pieces to attach them to the chair... or use some ribbon to tie them on. This will disguise the wagon wheel theme and allow you to repurpose the pieces.
