Dad Backpack Style

Bag for university student?

I'll be heading off to university in September and I've been searching for a bag, or laptop bag, to hold all my daily things needed for my lectures and tutorials and such. I have a 14'' Dell Inspiron laptop that I'll most likely be carrying around a lot, but also I want a bag that would hold a notebook, pens and some textbooks. Would you suggest messenger styled bags or a traditional backpack? I'd also prefer to check out bags that in addition to function have some fun design or style to them. If I wanted a run-of-the-mill, black, bulky laptop carrying case I'd steal my dad's. Any suggestions or links for bags that you may have used would be greatly appreciated.

You should check out ebags.com. I got a messenger bag there for my 13.3" macbook, and it's well-built and stylish.

However, if you're not used to using a messenger bag (I wasn't), it could hurt your shoulder/back for a while. If you want to be well-balanced, and carry lots of stuff, I would suggest buying a backpack.

The Modern Vagabond

A vagabond is an travelling person. Such individuals may be called drifters, tramps, rogues, gypsies, or hobos.   A vagabond is characterised by almost continuous travelling, absent a fixed home, temporary dwelling, or permanent home. Vagabonds are not bums, as bums are not known for travelling, preferring to stay in one location.

As for vagabonds, well they tend to be the opposite of the immobile types.... "Put on your backpack, grab your walking stick, and join us on the excursion of our lives. No alarm clocks, no suit and tie, and especially no "Working for The Man". Just plain old road trips, and good old Mother Nature to fulfill our daily lives."  All a traveller needs are a few accessories and something nice to sleep on (hopefully with a roof on it).   There are many items a backpacker can carry lightly, such as a tent, a sleeping bag, lantern, and hopefully some dry socks.

"This is one of twenty cartoons drawn in a small notebook that I found among all the old stuff at my work. There is no identification at all to who drew the cartoons or where the book comes from. The notebook is in a style that indicates that it was made in the 1940-50’s. Whoever this was, he/she shows a talent for cartoons and could probably have made a career of it. There are many ways a vagabond can get around and travel.  Backpacking, walking and hitching rides are the most cost efficient, but yet less reliable ways.  In today’s modern world, for the more established, even modern vagabonds, there are options like automobiles, motorcycles, and even recreational vehicles.  The ladder of these methods allows the more fortunate of the vagabonds, to be able to carry more of their personal items without straining their backs, and getting to their destination in a quicker and safer way. (they are usually a little bit less in physical shape than their walking counterparts.)
