diaper genie keeps ripping the bag?

I got a used diaper genie (not genie II, but original genie) from a friend, without instructions. I managed to put a refill in, but when I rotate the knob in the top part to twist the bag, it always rips it. I read that there is a "cut button" used to cut the bag when it's full. I wonder if I'm pressing it without knowing it - I don't see a button that I can push that may be for cutting the bag. I took out the funnel looking thing (is it the "rotating twist ring" that the instruction on the refill says to put inside the liner?) that I put in after the refill, then the bag doesn't get cut, but then it doesn't twist either.

So the question is, where is the "cut button" which I should make sure that I'm not pressing, and if that is not the problem, how can I rotate the bag without cutting?

Frankly, you are better off tossing the whole thing.

My mom had one given to her when she had my little brother (nearly 12 years ago) and the stupid thing was WAY more hassel than it was worth.

The smell was still there, it was a pain to empty/change, and the refills are expensive.

Just a review there for you, from someone who had one. I told everyone that if they bought me one, they might as well bring the receipt because I'd be returning it.
