Diaper Travel Tote Packing help! What bags to use?
I'm taking a long trip with a small child--2 long flights plus a day on the ground in between. My carry on items will have to include: changes of clothes, diapers, wipes, toys books and snacks for the child; a laptop; and my own purse and essentials (change of shirt and underwear at the very least!) My child will have a backpack of her own, but not a lot of room and I will probably be the one carrying it too! Between flights we are going to be out of the airport wandering around a major city using public transport and walking. Now--what is the best way to pack these items for maximum ease and convenience and not too many bags to be dealing with on the plane?? I have seen tote bags that include a padded space for a laptop and I'm considering if that would help...I'd like serious suggestions from traveling parents in particular.
As a parent AND an airline agent, you need to remember the 2pc carry on rule. So, make sure you put your purse inside one of your bags. Secondly, if your connection is more than 6 hrs you will have to claim and recheck your bags. Legally once you check your bags you can not leave the airport property, that is called abandonment, so if this is what you are choosing to do, know its against federal law, but dont mention it when you check in or they will refuse your baggage. Your carryons must be under 40 lbs each. Get a 22" rolling suitcase and rolling laptop case. They can stack on each other OR have a good sturdy rolling suitcase and if your child is big enough, they can sit on the top and straddle the handles as you pull it along. Ive seen a lot of parents do this. Just make sure when you are boarding the aircraft, that your child carries their own bags so that you do not exceed the 2 pc limit. If you feel you need it, ask for pre-boarding. Most families or people traveling with small children can pre-board. Also most major airports do not have luggage storage post 9/11 and baggage claim can not keep your bags for you.
