BASS GUITAR: Where do you find the best starter kits?
One of the new things I want to do for 2009 is learn how to play bass. I know the best thing to do is to look for a 'starter kit', but I don't know if I should order one online or try to find a music store. I've heard that the kit comes with everything: strings, cover bag, strap, practice amp and cords and even some free lessons on DVD with some kits. But how do you know what's best? And should you be looking for a certain kind of bass if you are left or right-handed? And when will you know it's time to move up from the "cheaper" bass to a more professional one?
There are several good starter kits, If I were you, I would get the Squier (by Fender) kit. It's not only an adequate bass and good playing one but it's one that you could take to a professional guitar tech for set up or, if needed sometime, for repair. Some of the really cheap ones the techs won't work on. They come in your choice of left or right handed and I would say, you'll know when you need to move on and that won't be until you're playing regularly on stage. The one part of that kit that won't really work for playing out is the amp. You'll have to have a more powerful one before you're playing on stage. good luck.
