Moving to Toronto from the US?

My fiancee has accepted a job in Toronto and we'll be moving there in January 2010 for at least 2 years.

We toured the city and a some apartments a few weeks ago and I'm so confused. We looked at a property on Elizabeth Street. I liked place but I don't know what the neighborhood is like. Of course the realtor sang its praises, but that's her job. I'm just curious what areas of Toronto are considered to be "good" and what may not be as desirable. We want to stay in the downtown area as that's where my partner will be working. We also need to be near a hospital (preferrably Mt. Sinai) because we're expecting a baby. I don't plan to drive in Canada, so a place with access to markets and such is ideal.

Also, does Toronto have any stores similar to Walmart or Target? Are they in the city or more suburban? I just need to know where I'll be able to buy things such as diapers and other baby needs.

Elizabeth is a great location! There is actually a hospital ON this street, so you're all set in that respect. It's not a very long street, spanning between College and Dundas St. W -- it's right near four subway stations (it depends where on the street you are to find which is closest -- Dundas, College, Queens Park, or St. Patrick). It's smack-dab in the middle of downtown, amazing location. If you want to live downtown it's overall pretty safe, just avoid Queen St. E, and the Gerrard-Jarvis area... Jarvis entirely, actually. The area you're mentioning is West, though, and these areas are East. You won't run into trouble in the West until Parkdale, but you're well away from that on Elizabeth.

Toronto has Wal Mart as well as Zellers, which is the Canadian equivilant to Target, owned by the Hudson's Bay Company (you'll see the department store The Bay and home furnishings store Home Outfitters, which are in the same family). I know that there is a Wal Mart in the Dufferin Mall, which is right by the Dufferin subway station. Of course you could go to walmart.ca and zellers.com to find locations nearest to where you'll be living.
