Expands Must
the universe is expanding(hubbles law).. there must be some empty space in which it expands..now what is that?
try to relate this to a expanding metal ball....on heating it expands into the space surrounding.....so now the universe expands into?????????
Let me begin by saying that "expanding" isn't really the best word to describe what is happening to the universe, although that is the word that is often used - a word choice which I think leads to a lot of unnecessary confusion regarding what is already a difficult topic! a more accurate word for what the universe is doing might be "stretching".
Galaxies then, are not strictly expanding away from each other but rather are attached to the fixed grid on the expanding fabric of spacetime. Thus, the galaxies give us the impression of moving away from each other. Imagine the surface of a balloon, on which you put dots. then start inflating the balloon. The distances between the dots will increase, so if you live in one of these dots, you will interpret this as the dots--which represent galaxies in this example--moving away from each other. In reality, of course, they remain in the same positions, with respect to latitudes and longitudes on the balloon, and it is the fabric of the balloon that is actually expanding
Asking the question, "Where is the universe expanding to?" implies some other coordinate grid outside spacetime. But since spacetime is linked to matter, there is no outside to the surface of the balloon. Rather, it is all the spacetime that is available.

if a tennis ball is heated in a pocket the air in the ball must expand so there for the ball should go faster?

Since the internal pressure would go up a bit, the ball should go a little faster, but it would not be much. If you had a radar gun to measure ball speed, you could use a ball machine to compare speed of various balls, but the balls would have to be from the same can to make them as similar as possible.
