Did the Pope commit the "Sin of Hedging"?
Jesus says to say "yes" when you mean yes, and "no" when you mean no. (Matthew 5:37) But the Pope says "the human being is to be respected and treated AS a person from the moment of conception" with one face and then with another face said "this assertion does not deal with the theme of personal identity". He went on to say that what he really meant to say was that the person status of the embryo should be treated "as if it were so".

Pope Benedict used to be called Cardinal Ratzinger, who wrote the Instruction Donum Vitae, and whose Academy clarified on his behalf that the "as a person" part really meant only "as if it were so".

I think you are splitting hairs.
The Catholic Church has fought against abortion and infanticide for almost 2,000 years and is not changing its position on the issue now.
Early Church writings: You shall not kill the embryo by abortion and shall not cause the newborn to perish. (Didache 2, 2: SCh 248, 148; cf. Ep. Barnabae 19, 5: PG 2, 777; Ad Diognetum 5, 6: PG 2, 1173; Tertullian, Apol. 9: PL 1, 319-320)
