Anything near the surface of the earth falls at a rate of 9.8 meters per second per second. And according to a famous equation,
d = 1/2 a t^2
... where d is distance, a is acceleration, and t is time.

So in this case, t=1 second, and a=9.8 m-sec^-2, so d must be 4.9 meters.

The answer is always true regardless of the initial speed, as long as the initial path is level. That's because if the initial path is level, the only force acting vertically on the projectile is the force of gravity.

That also means that the answer is NOT always true and depends on the initial angle. For example, if you shoot downwards, the projectile will fall much farther!
