G Diapers Messy

g "diapers" are they any good?
Hi Ladies, I'm going to be a new mom in a couple weeks and was wondering how many of you have used the g diapers and what your thoughts on them are. Do they leak? Are they hard to use? Would you recommend them to friends or family? By price are they cheaper or more expensive then regular disposable diapers? How many would you recommend buying if you plan on using them for a full time diaper system? And last but REALLY IMPORTANT are they messy and nasty like the old fashion cloth diapers?
I have used disposables (7th Generation), and G Diapers and I switched to cloth recently and I have to say, I like the cloth better than the G diapers. They are not all that absorbent, and the G diaper covers wear out a lot quicker than my cloth diaper covers. Honestly, there is not much difference in the grossness factor between using G diapers and cloth because tearing down the sides of a poopy g diaper to dump it in the toilet is just as bad as shaking out a cloth diaper to dump the poop into the toilet. And every time the baby poops, it gets on the inner liner, whereas sometimes the cloth is cleaner because the diaper holds in the poop, so you don't have to change the covers every time the baby poops like you do with a g diaper.
During the day I use cloth on my son. I use 7th generation disposables at night because my son is not used to feeling wet at night since he was not in cloth as a young baby. On my next baby I am just going to start with cloth. My cloth diapers don't leak because I have good covers- some have velcro and others have snaps, so there is no need to use pins and plastic pants like the old days. With cloth diapers, I dump any solid poop in the toilet (something you have to do with any kind of diaper unless you want the garbage to stink to high heaven), then spray it down with stain remover and let it sit for 10-15 minutes in the laundry sink and then rinse it out with cold water and put it in the diaper pail (with a waterproof diaper pail liner so it doesn't leak) until it's time to wash it. I put the pee ones straight into the diaper pail without rinsing and they don't stain. I do a load every other day and it's really not a big deal. You do a pre-wash or a soak in cold to rinse them out, then a hot wash with laundry soap, then an extra rinse in warm water. I also use an oxy booster product in the wash to kill germs. By washing in hot they are just as sanitary as the diaper service, maybe even more so because your baby is not sharing diapers with other children like they do with the diaper service. They come out of the dryer looking and smelling great.
I still use g diapers if we go visit family but I don't recommend g diapers at night- they are not very absorbent since they are meant to break down in the toilet. Plus they are a little more expensive compared to disposable and cloth. If you want to try them out don't get the covers that come with them. Buy Thirsties or Bummis brand diaper covers. That's what I use for cloth covers and I have used the g diapers with them too and they never leak. They are shaped the same way as a prefold cloth diaper so it fits perfectly.
If you are going to go with disposable, I would do 7th generation without a doubt. I almost never had any leaks and they don't stink like baby powder like all the other disposables do, which is important if your baby has sensitive skin like my son. Cloth made a big difference for him in that respect too. His skin is so much better now that he is in cloth. Look at the website I'm listing- the owner has really great, honest descriptions about all the stuff she sells and the prices are good. This is where I bought my cloth diapers and covers, and I really love it now. Once you get used to it it's not a big deal, and it's certainly not any harder than using a g diaper.

1 Less Diaper - What Does This Mean For the Environment? A Reduced Carbon Footprint For Your Baby!
Practicing Elimination Communication (EC) is a Great Way to Reduce All Forms of Diaper Waste and Washing.
This means a smaller carbon footprint for your baby. The Earth will benefit from less waste generated by those notoriously huge creators of waste - brand new babies! Consider EC, or Baby Pottying, as a way to begin gradually reducing the amount of diapers your baby wears each day. Aim to use one less diaper daily. Your baby will help...
'EC' is a traditional, ancient way of caring for the hygiene needs of your baby.
Good News! Yes, you can ease into these ideas gradually - perhaps the easiest way of doing anything... By easing into EC it will seem as if it is just a natural extension of your parenting abilities - because it IS a natural thing, yet a learned skill as well.
Elimination Communication is a cumbersome word that gives you the best of all worlds: using diapers and helping your baby use the potty at the same time. You will help reduce the amount of washing you need to do when using cloth diapers. (which use at least 40% less natural resources than disposable diapers)
You will need to change literally thousands of diapers until your child weans to underwear. What is one diaper less each day? It's an easy goal to strive for!
What Does One Less Diaper Each Day Mean?
1. 1 less diaper a day over 2.5 years is over 912 fewer diapers - that's a lot of experience for your baby too, and a lot of moments connecting with your baby in a positive, fun way...
2. 1 less diaper a day over 3 years is 1095 fewer diapers - that's over $492 saved if you consider an average disposable diaper costs .45c...
3. Even 1 less pooey diaper each week is 156 diapers you can avoid having to wash - I'm not actually sure how many washing loads that would be... but I'm the thought of that many LESS messy diapers to manage has your attention!
The average family spends $300-$400 on disposable wipes - 7 less diapers each week will mean a reduction in this waste too, as well as plastic diaper disposal bags.
By now you are thinking: "1 Less Diaper - but that's not intimidating at all! I can do that!"
Yes, you can.
In cooperation with your baby, as a team. Your baby will wear diapers between potty visits as you build your confidence and learn what you need to know to reduce your reliance on full-time diapers.
By picking up some skills in baby pottying, you will be reducing your use of diapers by 'tweaking' the skills you already have, by adding in some new skills, to help you have a 'greener' baby, save money - and have FUN in the process as you connect with your baby in a slightly different way than is currently common.
Part Time Diaper Free is dedicated to helping you reduce your diaper use as you gently, naturally and gradually practice Elimination Communication with your baby, and discover the joys of doing so.
