Disaster Zone Declaration: is Anioma an Abandoned Baby?

I want to begin this write-up by congratulating the entire Governors of the south-eastern region of Nigeria over their ability to get the attention of the federal government to the environmental challenges facing the states. Whoever understands the difficulty which has militated against the ability of the Igbo leaders to present one solid voice will understand that these leaders deserve more congratulatory messages at least for breaking about many years of jinx.

“Gully erosion is the removal of soil along drainage lines by surface water runoff” according to David Ziebell, and Penny Richard and occurs when water is channeled across unprotected land and washes away the soil along the drainage lines. The effect of this can lead to loss of productive land, dissection of properties, exposure of tree roots, cutting it away from the fertility of the soil and destruction of fences etc.

However, I wish to observe that this ecological challenge ulcerating our landslides as brought to the attention of the Federal Government is not typical to the South-eastern geo-political zone but the whole of Igbo land including the Anioma and Igbo in Rivers state, and one would have expected that the solution being sought from the Federal Government of Nigeria being the outlining of special interventions and funding details that will define solutions through the declaration of the affected areas as a ecologically disaster regions.

We are all Igbo; we are told, and no better moment than the famous visit to President Yar’ Adua would have approvingly given us that sense of confidence and more natural and ancestral belonging if our case or situation had been representatively presented to our President. As a people of a kind, having known to altogether suffer persecution, pogrom, and marginalization before, during and after the gruesome civil war, and still suffering yet from environmental disaster, a problem so monumentally requiring financial capability to handle because of all us are touched, we would have expected that we put in the plans of the Igbo governors. Although, a specious argument may be advanced that the Anioma and other Igbo of Rivers state are not presently constituted in the South-east region of Nigeria, a better arrangement pointing to one indivisible ethnic-nationality would have perfectly seen the whole lot of Igbo benefiting from this arrangement.

Certainly, the Igbo leaders would have wished that the whole Igbo communities currently buried in gullies with wiped-out farmlands and truncation of major roads are freed because for sure this was necessitated by extreme neglect supported by marginalization. It is my opinion that the whole of Igbo land is with no one exception is marginalized, and if we sink with the Igbo, are we not expected to rise together? For 30 years, the Igbo of Nigeria has been living side by side with marginalization from the Federal government and there have been collective loud cries from Igbo of south-east and South-south. Erosion has been catastrophically devastating us equally felt by us all.

This sad development seethes us in poverty and degradation, we feel it hard. I believe that the best form of remedy and protection should come from one’s kith and kin; we cannot expect state government with several other different ethnic-groups to carry our concern to the heavens when our brothers have failed to do so.

The Anioma region is more than before in utter decay, yet witnessing worsening situations almost on daily basis without attracting the attentions of the Delta State Government. Gully erosion is or worst enemy, soon farming will become a thing of the past in this region; maybe until then the Delta State Government will come to our aids. It is disappointing that Anioma communities blessed with crude oil reserves are not seen as oil producing communities and the Niger-Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is not considering the region as one which requires its services.

Nsopulu Nezianya best summarizes it thus:

 “Our people continue to languish in poverty as the neglect of successive state (Mid west, Bendel and now Delta) governments takes (sic) hold. No roads, water or electricity to (sic) many of the towns. It is remarkable how Anioma people continue to show restraint.”

All the past and present Delta State Governments supported by their friends have acted as though Anioma is not in existence just because the people are deemed to be Igbo. This government should at least show concern in curbing ecological disasters even if it does not want to bring about development to the people of this region. Ubuluku-Uku in Aniocha South Local Government is existing in abandonment, no roads and the devastation of the town by unchecked erosion is continuing claiming several lives and destroying properties. Worried by erosion scourge, the Ubuluku Development Union, Warri Branch decided to take the fate of the people into their hands on 2nd November 2002 when it launched a N500million Development project to assist the abandoned town through communal development. Six years after, this has not attracted the attention of the state government.

The situation of Ibusa, another Anioma community is not different either, the entire town is gradually being sank by gully erosion such that if the gullies are not stabilized now it may become too late to do so, amenities and property values in the town have been reduced in totality because gullies in Ibusa often occur in productive areas of catchments. Only the grace of the government will save the situation. At rainy seasons, water is often seen flowing like oceans and sweeping through every available object in the town, while eroded gullies in the town are filled with solid objects such as old drums and concretes. Ibusa is increasingly facing environmental disaster which if not averted soonest may take everyone with surprise.

Erosion is much more serious menaces to Agbor, Nsukwa, Akwukwu, Ukala, Idumuje-Ugboko, Ukwunzu, Onicha-Ugbo etc Situations here horrible to behold indeed and ordinarily situations here should have invited member of State of House of Assembly but this has become elusive, with the people living and managing as usual like the typical Nigerians which they are. It is high time our government gave topmost priorities to issues having to do with human lives rather than concentrate on diversionary and unnecessarily painstaking matters not relating to the people.

As we remember the Anioma region, we also need the help of our Brothers to tackle this problem of erosion; this in some way will attract the urgent attention of the Federal Government and help to make our communities a better place to be.
