Infant Baby Necessities

What happens if a baby isn't given attention it needs?
After seeing a few things on tv of neglect and child abuse, it makes me wonder what happens to infants that aren't given the attention they need? How does it affect them? Could it possibly cause any mental/emotional problems later from neglecting an infant?
Even with the necessities such as food and all those things in order to live, what happens if they aren't played with and held and things of that nature?
At most I've seen documentaries about this. We already know that babies, even very young ones, respond to touch and human interaction. They are comforted by touching, facial cues from parents, voices, and smells, even as newborns. Without that crucial interaction with others, especially the parents or caregivers, children who were neglected in this way can most definitely grow up to have problems. Maybe you've heard of children left in orphanages in Romania, etc. who are just not cared for because there are too many children and not enough employees. They often have emotional problems later on in life.
Or another very sad case of feral children, who are essentially "wild," which is what feral means. One case in particular was of a child who was locked in their bedroom with almost no social interaction from the outside world or even her own family. Once authorities found her she shied away from people and could barely utter anything more than guttural noises like an animal.

"Severe neglect of an infant’s need for stimulation and nurturance can result in the infant failing to thrive and even infant death. Emotional neglect is often the most difficult situation to substantiate in a legal context and is often reported secondary to other abuse or neglect concerns." -- http://www.americanhumane.org/about-us/newsroom/fact-sheets/child-neglect.html
ETA: It's not that babies won't "remember," it's that they learn from our cues from a very early age. Babies can already learn to mimic our facial expressions by a few weeks old, I believe. And they can be soothed by voices and sounds when in the womb. Without that interaction, they literally wither and fail to thrive, which is probably a more psychological and emotional aspect that triggers physical development.

Infant & Toddler Parenting Advice : How to Fly With a Baby
Do you still love nap time, as an adult?
Personally, I have always loved taking naps.
More than that, I think my body requires them. I also have to get at least 10 hours of sleep at night, or I just don't feel "normal". If I don't have time to nap during the day, I generally sleep longer at night too- I will go to bed an hour or two earlier because I just won't be able to keep my eyes open. On average, I'd say I have to get about 12 hours of sleep a day. I've been this way my whole life- except, of course, when my babies were still infants and I was up all the time taking care of them! (What an exhausting time that was!!!)
What is your sleep schedule?
Do you still take naps when you have the time?
Are your naps more of a necessity or something you do out of boredom?
Man, do you have any idea how lucky you are to get 12 hrs of sleep in a day? Is it fair to assume you’re a SAHM (unless you nap at the office which I highly doubt)?
I love naps, but I can’t tell you the last time I’ve had one. I wake up at 5:30 am and go to work until 4:30 pm. Then I’m nonstop until at least 10:00 pm. Usually 11:00 pm. If it’s a weekend, my chance to take a nap would be when my son does, but I can’t take a nap during those times because I have laundry to do or dishes or grocery shopping.
So I guess I’m lucky if I can get 6 or 7 hrs of sleep in a day. So again, count your blessings if you can get 12 hrs of rest in a day…that’s like, a miracle!
