Battling Childhood Obesity – Michelle Obama's Fight And Every Parent's
As U.S. President Barack Obama build a strong name in his young presidency through a sweeping healthcare legislation, his wife Michelle Obama is creating an extravagant popularity among parents by taking crucial actions to battle childhood obesity. The first lady entered into a very favorable arena wherein she can build her own name and gain respect of many Americans. By working on the problems behind the increasing cases of childhood obesity, Michelle Obama has come out to the people not just as the first lady of the country, but a mother, a teacher, a fighter, a concerned citizen and a leader with the initiative and capability to make difference. Her initiatives are inspiring, and big support from parents is evident.
For a country, wherein both parents are busier in secular work, providing kids with food, entertaining them, and keeping them secure inside their homes is the best and only choice. That led to seemingly amusing benefits. Children started gaining weight. Parents need not worry of their whereabouts because they simply sit in front of monitors to play video games. But only until parents notice they have to buy them unusually larger uniform shirts and school uniforms due, did they take efforts to control their eating habits and encourage them to play outside. Only then did they realize that their way of caring for their children made way to overeating, deprivation from necessary physical activities, and ultimately to obesity.
Sadly, childhood obesity is a problem not lurking not just in homes but in school premises and the community in general. When parents aren't able to make snacks for them to bring to school, they simply hand them a few bucks to buy food stuff in the school canteen. What do canteens have for children? Soda, chips, sweets, hotdogs and other food products having less nutritional values. Adding to this problem is the proliferation of fast food chains. There's Wendy's, Boston Market, Burger King, Popeye's and McDonalds, but there are no parents around to guide them which meals they should pick or tell them they can't eat these stuff too often.
The number of obese children soared. Cases among adolescents tripled and doubled amongst children according to Centers for Disease Control or CDC. There was a 5% increase among those ages 12 to 19 increased by 5% in 1980 and 18.1 percent in 2008. Mrs. Obama started the "Let's Move" campaign, which is aimed to make sure all children receive affordable and nutritious food. Parents and schools will be playing a big part on this campaign. Also the campaign seeks to provide children a safe place to play.
