Pad Dust
Pad Dust
I got a Nikon D40X less than a week ago, and it has dust bunnies. How do I get rid of them?

I have already used an ear bulb and tried to blow out the dust. What's left are tiny, nearly microscopic, dots. I already know about the CopperHill method and all those other techniques that require PEC-PAD. As of current, I'm not interested in buying PEC-PADs and/or Eclipse. Would I harm the CCD filter if I were to clean it with a Q-tip soaked in 70% ethanol solution?

The best way to is to blow out the dust, using a pressure canister designed for that purpose. Don't use a q-tip, as that can leave cotton fibers there. Be sure your camera is set for B (bulb) which leave the mirror up and exposed the CCD sensor for the longest time.

Try one of these techniques. Read the part about cleaning the CCD.

When I first got my Nikon D70, I had problems within a couple of weeks with dust. Since my first "home cleaning", I have had zero problems over the last few years.

What happened? I just learned some cautionary techniques.

#1. I practice changing lenses so I can do it quickly, without hesitation.
#2. I loosen the rear cap to the new lens before removing the already mounted one. Then I use that cap on the lens I've taken off.
#3. (most important) I work in as much of a dustfree environment as possible, and ALWAYS face my camera body face-down during the entire change. That way, gravity doesn't pull dust down into the body.
#4. I change lenses as little as possible. Currently, I use two different D70 bodies, each with a different focal range zoom. During a recent two-week long trip to China, I took one D70 and only one lens, an 18-200mm VR.

Even though there are products out there for it, I would really avoid using anything that touches the sensor.

By the way, check your manual for how to take a dust reference shot. Here's a write up about it in an article about the Nikon D40 Setup Menu.

I hope this is helpful for you.

2009 Honda Accord Rear Brake Pad Change

How To Know Its Time To Change Your Rug Pad

If you have rug pads under your rugs, and you should, then you should be aware of the time to replace them. Quality rug pads will last a long time yet eventually they do need to be replaced. Whether you have a polyester rug pad, felt rug pad or rubber rug pad under your rug, the rug pad will wear and there are some signs to look for to know when it is time to replace your rug pad.

Natural rubber rug pads by nature will eventually dry out. A quality rubber rug pad will probably last over 10 years before any drying takes place. When you check your rubber rug pad and it looks like it may be cracking, it is a good time to think about changing the pad. What can happen if you wait too long after a rubber rug pad starts to crack is that it may start breaking down and creating a mess on your floor. I do not mean sticking to your floor, but more of the rubber creating a dusting on your floor. Again, with a quality rubber rug pad, this should not happen soon at all yet it is good to be prepared for when it does happen.

Felt rug pads may start to loosen up after several years of use. By this I mean the jute may start to shed and you may start seeing fibers around the edges of your rug. If this is the case, it is a good time to think about replacing the rug pad. A quality felt rug pad, one that is quite dense like a 40 ounce quality, will take a long time to shed. Like with all rug pads, it is a good idea to check your felt jute rug pad once in a while to make sure all is intact.

Finally, for polyester, nylon or pvc (plastic) non slip rug pads, there are a few signs that signal to replacing the rug pad. By this type of rug pad, I mean the ones with the open weave, or holes. Lift your area rug once in a while to check your non slip rug pad and look for things such as pieces of the pad coming up and perhaps sticking to the back of the rug. When this type of rug pad starts to wear, small pieces of the pad can be seen coming off the actual rug pad. This is a good time to think about replacing the pad.

Rug pads are usually out of sight, out of mind. When you clean your floors, it is a great idea to just give a simple check to the rug pad. Chances are with a quality rug pad, there is no reason to change the pad for many years. Even with this fact, each rug pad can go through different stress and wear depending on the use and the floor so be aware of this and replace the rug pad when any of the above wear signs show.
