Knowing the Difference Between Our Kids Colds and Allergies
The number one reason children stay home from school is because of a cold. Colds can occur more then eight times in a year. Some common signs are coughing, fever, aches, pains, sneezing, watery eyes and a runny nose. But what if these signs are not from a cold at all, but from an allergic reaction? A cold is the body responding to the virus. An allergies is a histamine response to things your kids may be allergic too. Unfortunately kids can catch allergies as much as grownups can. Children under two years of age are less likely to get them since allergies usually show up within the second year. Knowing the difference between both of them can be somewhat frustrating since both have common symptoms and require different care and medications. Fortunately knowing the differences can help. Here are just a few of the different symptoms:
Cold
- Fever & aches
- Thick and yellowish discharge coming from the nose
- Contagious
- Symptoms develop slowly, not all at once
- Normally last between 3-14 days
Allergies
- Itchy nose,eyes and throat. No fever or aches unless it has developed into a sinus infection
- Watery discharge coming from the nose
- Non contagious
- Symptoms occur all at once
- Can last up to a month as long as they are exposed to the allergen
It breaks my heart to see children go through these difficult times. It is hard for an adult to deal with these symptoms imagine how our children must feel. It is very uncomfortable especially for them. Lets try to prevent this from happening in the first place. Teach your children to frequently wash there little hands. Kids touch just about everything and have the bad habit of putting their fingers in their mouth afterwards. Always try to carry hand sanitizer in your bag and in their backpacks. Make sure your child drinks plenty of water. Fluids flush out harmful impurities and toxins in our bodies, and aid in the production of mucus. Not drinking enough water can lead to dehydration and can result in a high fever. Also, try to keep your children away from any friends or family members that may be sick.
Dust mites can cause allergies and these bugs love to crawl around our beds, especially bed sheets that have not been washed often. Use duvet covers instead of comforters, especially for your kids. Change their bedding often helps as well. Duvet covers can be washed frequently, which is what what they need. Wash their bedding weekly, at least twice a week. Make sure the water in the washer machine is hot enough to wash away bacteria and dust mites. Duvet covers come in many different styles. I am pretty sure your kids will find the one they like. Try keeping your pets out of the bedrooms. Pets dander can cause bad allergies. Understanding the symptoms and prevention can keep our children healthy and most importantly, happy.
