What kind of sewing machine do I need?

I looking to buy one that isn't to expensive that I can use to make hand bags, diaper bags, ect. I don't know much about sewing machines. What features are available and most usefull to have? I seen one with a "quilting" feature. What is that and is it useful? Thanks in advance!

Decorative stitches are things like Greek key designs or rows of little duckies that you can stitch out. Unless you're in to sewing kids clothes, you probably won't use them often. Heirloom stitches are a group of decorative stitches that are often used to imitate "French hand sewing".... it's pretty fussy work, but can be beautiful or way over the top. Typically most commonly practiced in the southern states. If you think you might be interested, borrow Carol Ahles' book, Fine Machine Sewing from the library and read it through, especially the section on machines.
