Keep Your Home Tidy with A Speed Cleaning Checklist

1…2….3….Go!  It's time to learn how to speed clean your house.  There are only a handful of people who like to clean, clean and clean.  Most are not thrilled at the prospect of tidying up the kitchen, cleaning the bathroom or even picking up items off the bedroom floor.  Ignoring the buildup of clutter, dirt and grime is never a good thing…both for the physical and mental health of the whole family.

Speed cleaning involves organization.  It is a strategy wherein you face the cleaning tasks head on by identifying all of these tasks then assigning them to specific days of the week.  No need to lump them in one day.  You will get all chores done quickly and efficiently and still have time for your favorite activities.

Speed cleaning checklist

There are some chores that need to be done daily while others can be postponed for a day or two.  Other tasks are done at the end of the week, one a month or seasonally.

Daily chores

These are chores that you absolutely have to do every day.  Place your daily checklist on the family message board or on the fridge door.  In order to save more time, assign some of the chores to other household members.

Bedroom:  The beds have to be made and the dirty clothes thrown into the hamper.  The rest of the clothes that are lying around are to be hung.  The dresser and nightstands must be cleared of clutter.  Put everything back in its proper place.  Vacuum only if necessary.

Living room:  Fluff the throw pillows and straighten the furniture.  Clear the clutter off the coffee table and the side tables.  Vacuum and mop only areas that need to be cleaned.

Kitchen:  Wash the dishes, pots, pans and other cooking and dining tools.  Wipe the kitchen counters with a disinfectant cleaner.  Wipe the stove top and backsplash as well. Scrub the sink clean.  Vacuum or mop any spills on the floor.  

Bathroom:  Straighten the vanity.  Hang towels.  Before stepping out of the shower, rinse the walls and the floors.  Clean the sink with a disinfectant cleaner.  Wipe it dry.  Clean the toilet bowl with a toilet bowl brush and toilet bowl cleaner.  Wipe the toilet seat with toilet paper.  Spot clean the floor if necessary.

Weekly chores

The chores that need to be done weekly can be spread over different days.  Assign major bathroom cleaning on a day different from when you will vacuum and mop the whole house.  Slightly intense kitchen cleaning should also be assigned a different day.  The weekly checklist should also be displayed where everyone can see it.  Delegate tasks to other family members.

Bedroom:  Shake the curtains/drapes or dust the blinds.  Dust and wipe all surfaces including window sills, appliances and light fixtures.  Change the linens.  Vacuum the whole room.  If you have hardwood floors, vacuum, mop and dry.  Take out the trash and change the liner.

Bathroom:  Thoroughly clean the bathroom.  Vacuum if necessary.  Scrub all tiled surfaces, wipe and dry walls.  Clean the toilet bowl and bathroom sink.  Wipe the mirror and de-clutter the countertops.  Change the shower curtain. Take out the trash and change the liner.

Living room:  Wipe the blinds or shake the dust off curtains and drapes.  Dust all surfaces including window sills, shelves, appliances and light fixtures.  Vacuum and spot clean the upholstery.  Spot clean the walls.  Vacuum or mop according to the type of floor you have in the living area.

Kitchen:  Dust or wipe any window treatments in the kitchen.  Wipe cabinet doors, shelves, tables and chairs.  Wipe down appliances and clean the microwave oven and toaster inside and out.  Scrub tiled surfaces with a disinfectant cleaner.  Vacuum, mop and dry the floor.  Take out the trash and replace the garbage bag.

Laundry:  Wash, dry, iron, fold and keep all laundry items.  You need not do laundry daily unless you have a big household.  Make a special schedule for the laundry.  Assign a day of the week for all dirty clothes.  Another day can be assigned to linens and other items.  

Monthly and Seasonal chores

On a calendar, write down all chores that are not done on a daily or weekly basis.  An electronic planner or calendar would work better because you can set it so that it alarms when a monthly or seasonal chore needs to be accomplished.

Here are just some chores that you don't have to do often:

·    Cleaning out cabinets, drawers, the kitchen pantry, laundry room, garage or attic
·    Deep cleaning of appliances like the refrigerator, freezer or oven
·    Cleaning and keeping holiday decorations
·    Cleaning the gutter.
·    Shampooing the carpet
·    Wiping or washing the walls
·    Washing the blinds or curtains
·    Changing the air filters or cleaning out the vents
·    Cleaning the screens
·    Turning over the mattresses

Prepare your tools

Make sure to have all your cleaning tools and supplies with you as you go from room to room.  It can save you a whole lot of time.  Get a plastic carrier that you can tote around.  Put your cleaning essentials in there.  Some items that you can put in a carrier are:

·    Duster or microfiber cloths
·    Different types of rags
·    Different types of sponges
·    Wood polishing spray
·    Glass cleaner
·    All purpose household cleaner

Feel free to add more.  Make a separate carrier for the bathroom cleaning supplies and kitchen cleaning items.

Speed cleaning is all about having a cleaning system in place.  Clean as you go and clean only what is dirty.  Make a checklist to save you time.  Since all cleaning tasks are written and assigned their own days of the week, there's no need to think about what you need to do for the day.  In a short amount of time, you can easily have a clean and relaxing place to live in.  Ready?
