Short Haul

my better half has never flown before and would like to try a short haul first, any suggestions?

passport o.k. but needs to be under an hour each way.

It is great that your partner is going to try flying for the first time!

I currently work in the travel sector and have provided you with a few tips and suggestions below.

As you mention under and hour I have also broke it up to weekend break and slightly longer.

LONG WEEKEND:

- Amsterdam - great little city with very friendly people. Has a haven of Canels to explore my moonlight cruises and dinner cruises also. Amsterdam was also the home of Anne Frank, the Jewish girl who hid in a secret attic from the Nazi's during the war.

Amsterdam also produces the most music of any country in the world and therefore has an array of clubs and bars to reflect this! A very chic city.

There are 2 good airports to choose from: Schiphol (Main), which is the nearest to the city centre and used by most airlines in the world OR you could choose Eindhoven (Regional), which is just under and hour away but is home to budget airlines such as Ryanair. Each flight is about an hour long or less.

- Paris is another great city to explore and I am sure I don't need to tell you what they have to offer. Simply too much! Again there are 2 airport to fly in to with the same reasons as above. They are Charles De Gaulle (Main) or Paris Beauvais (Regional). Both are about an hour. however Beauvais is slightly further out so a rail journey will be needed to city centre.

WEEK or longer:

Well you are spoilt for choice really. A lot of Spain is within an hour as is Portugal.

One of the things I like doing with friends on days of is booking a cheap flight to Palma (Spain) or Faro (Portugal). Both areas are beautiful and have beaches, shops, bars, restaurants and night life.

The good things is that particularly in Faro, one of the beaches is by the airport, so you could just get accommodation nearer there.

TIPS!!

As it is your husbands first time he is probably going to be quite nervous. I always find that carrying Kalms on board helps nervous passengers. (Buy them from any chemist/supermarket).

Try and book an aisle seat. This way he will not feel boxed in an panic. He will feel as though he has more space. Try and get this just location just behind the wing. There is more stability here in turbulence and less noise if you sit behind the engine.

Not a good idea to go for exit seats on the first time as we crew find that people panic being by the doors and seeing what we do etc.

If you have the resources to do so then try and upgrade to a class with more space and room such as Premium + etc. This way you receive more of a personal service with frequent drinks etc that your husbands mind will be taken over other things with cabin crew service.

at what time length of flight does BA change from short haul to long haul?

Tel Aviv is usually the destination that is borderline. TLV has been operated by both shorthaul and longhaul aircraft in the last few years. It is currently operated by longhaul not because of the flight time I suspect, but because of the class of product that is demanded by the passengers. The TLV flight takes a huge number of passengers who are connecting to BA longhaul and they tend to demand a longhaul product (flat beds etc).

Flight time wise it is only half an hour's flight from Larnaca and could probably happily be operated by shorthaul.
