What to do about a money-grubbing "friend"?

I knew a guy in school 23 years ago. Spoken to him just 4 times since then when we happen to accidentally bump into each other. He's essentially a total stranger to me. A week ago I get an email from his wife, who I know even less, and she's invited me and my wife to come to a babshower. And, by the way, please visit our gift registry, Paypal accepted. Curious as to their needs, I surf over and see the first item on their wish list is a $400 pair of silver baby spoons. Anyway ... I reply and say we're unable to attend the wedding and wish them all the best, etc. I receive a reply today. They're "so deeply sorry we're unable to attend. Your presence will be truly missed. Even though you can't be here, the best way to share the wonderful journey of life with us would be to visit our registry. Our live-in nurse will have to change a lot of diapers..." Should I fork out for some expensive gift or ignore the money grubber?
