Skirt Hand
How can I put a zipper in a hand made skirt?
I am making a skirt (not from a pattern), and I need to know if I can machine sew in a zipper without having a special foot.
I don't have the money to buy any special attachments for my machine, but I'd like to be able to make the skirt "form fitting" and not have an elastic waist.
Any help is appreciated.
Actually, the last skirt I did this for came out easier with the zipper. I used the area I put the zipper in to help it form. I didn't need an extra foot. I just had to go slower.
Also - Using an "invisable zipper" helped.

Do you have any advice for sewing clothes by hand?
I am attempting to sew a ruffle skirt by hand for the first time. It's not a difficult concept, but I'm worried that all the hard work will be for nothing if the stitches don't hold.
Any advice?
The major construction stitch you should use for seams that will be stressed in any way is either plain backstitch, or a backstitch followed by a couple of small running stitches (faster, not quite as strong). You need to work on making your stitches uniformly sized, probably about 6-8 stitches per inch, and of uniform tension.

When hand sewing, you should be seated at a table that's just about elbow height, and the bulk of the fabric should be supported by the table. It'll feel strange at first, but it's actually more comfortable than trying to sew in your lap or up in the air -- both of which will allow your fabric to stretch out of shape.
