how do i get my guy back on a bike?

a couple of years ago he took a nasty fall and shattered both of his ankles, and fractured his skull and a couple of ribs. he hasn't raced (motocross) since. he will occasionally ride around on his dad's property but he won't hit the jump and barely goes out of first gear. i know how badly he misses it, he talks about it all the time. i know he's scared but i know how happy it would make him! his dad and brother still race, should i enlist them for help? or just let it go?
anyone ever been badly hurt? did you ride again?

ive been there, and its not a good place to be... everyone crashes in motocross, but some crashes are more serious than others
the most serious crash i ever had was i came up short on a triple, i got thrown off the bike straight over the handle bars and smashed onto the dirt. I got ran over and hit by over 4 different riders. I broke my femur, one rib, dislocated my ankle, and my shoulder, and i had a concussion for 4 days. After that, it took me around 1 and like 3/4 of a year to start riding again. I mean, it was a big crash, and it wasnt because i was still in pain, or my doctors and parents forbid it, but i was scared.. that i was probably gonna crash again, and it might be even worse. But motocross is my life, and i wasnt going to give up, So i took it sloow,....theres no deadline to start riding again, no one should force him to get back into it quickly, just let him choose when he's ready to start again, and maybe just support him every step of the way i guess. My parents, and friends were by my side every single second when i started riding. Anyway, after i started riding again, it took me like another year to re-learn all my racing skills and get the courage and strength to race again, and i did! I didnt do so well, at the end of the season i placed a 16 out of 23 riders. Which i was kinda proud of, i didnt think id be able to get half way through one race, and yet i made it through the season. So maybe he should put the racing on hold for a while, and just do simple stuff to regain his riding like weaving in and out of cones, maybe race starts, riding in straight lines, but probably shouldn't start off with jumps right away. Just take it as slow as he wants to. Oh and if he has a friend, or somewhere he can get a smaller bike than he has it might just help....depending on what bike he has now. I crashed on my 125, so i went down to an 85 until i got better. Hope this helps
