Sling Bag Choice

Which firearm would you select?

Hi, I built a cabin in the woods. It is remote to say the least. To reduce weight and bulk I will take only one firearm for protection and hunting. The choice must be made from a selection of the following.
1. Ruger 10/22
2. 44 magnum hand gun (six shot)
3. Marlin lever action 44 magnum equipped with 7 power scope
4. Mossberg model 500 12 gauge shotgun equipped with two inter changeable barrels. One barrel is rifled for slugs. The second barrel is for buckshot and is equipped with a choke. This allows for hunting deer and bagging fowl. Only draw back is that shotgun shells are large. But I have allocated space for 40 slug rounds, 40 shot shells of # 7 bird shot and 10 rounds 00 shot. My mossberg is also equipped with a sling. I know the shotgun with two barrels is more bulk and weight but it offers far more versatility. However, I still would like feedback. Thanx, Robert

Robert, hands down, the shotgun is the best choice for all around use. Judging by the details you gave, I'm pretty sure you already knew that too.
But, you can save a little weight and space by just going with a 20" barrel and modified choke. Add the mag tube to hold 7 shells and off you go. That set up is great for bears, deer, elk etc (all within 125 yards, with 75 yards being ideal.) And, with that barrel length and a little bit of practice, you will be hitting birds, rabbits etc easily as well, with bird shot. It is an excellent all around choice if you can only take one firearm..
The .22 is fine for potting meat, but stinks for protection from 4 legged, and even 2 legged critters. The .44 mag is an OK choice, you can use snake shot for small birds at very close range, but not at any distance, .44 specials for small game and .44 mag for larger stuff, but it is still on the light side for a big bear. Believe me, I have taken a number of them with handguns, slugs in a shotgun, archery and rifle. The .44 mag also has such a short site radius that it takes an experienced shooter to hit a smaller target, or even a larger one if it is moving.
