Stitch Ribbon

I have a knitting question. I need directions for Open-edge cast on.You cast on with a waste thread.?
I was given a scarf kit as a gift. I am not a new knitter but this a new technique to me. It is called Open edge cast on , "Invisible Cast on, Open Cast On and Stranded Cast On". There is a waste ribbon that floats under the needle. It looks like that at some point I will go back and pick these stitches to continue on with the work. The knitting is easy but I cann't get started. I hope someone can explain it better than the pattern.
A provisional cast on can be done on waste yarn or over the cable of a circular needle. As you said, you'll go back and knit those stitches later.
This site has a video of a provisional cast on. Scroll down to the section called,
"Invisible (Provisional) Cast-On
aka Looped Cast-On"
I also like this technique that uses a crochet hook.

Making A Simple Scissor Keep With Counted Cross Stitch
How much valuable stitching time have you lost searching for your scissors?. It is quite amazing the places you will find them. Since making my keep I have always known where to find my scissors.
There are kits available on the market for counted cross stitch keeps but it is more personal if you make your own. Using leftover fabric and threads from the workbox is more economical.
When choosing your threads it is best to choose bold colours so the keep stands out.
Fabric choice will depend on the counts you have available 28 count over two threads gives a more delicate finish to the design. When finishing it is more flexible for stitching the seams. Instead of making one side in cross stitch both sides can be of matching or contrasting designs. This is an alternative to using a backing fabric.
Materials required
14 HPI aida fabric or 28 count eavenweave over two threads.
Finished fabric size 3.5"x3.5" (9x9 cm)
Stranded Cotton
Size 24 needle
Backing fabric 3.5"x3.5" (9x9 cm) to match the cross stitch piece.
Sewing needle and cotton
2oz wadding the same size as the finished cross stitch.
Ribbon 18" (46cm) for attaching the scissors.
Making up the Scissor Keep
1 With right sides facing stitch three sides of the keep. This leaves one side open.
2 Turn the right sides out and gently press with a warm iron.
3 Put the wadding in the centre and slip stitch the opening.
4 At the corner double the ribbon and place the two ends inside and complete the stitching.
Finally attach the scissors to the ribbon.
To enhance your keep attach cord or piping to the edges of the keep and add a tassle to one corner.
Within a few hours you have achieved a useful addition to your workbox.
