What is a Diaper Shirt?

I was gifted some baby layette items and I keep seeing these light cotton baby vests. The tag says its a diaper shirt. What is the purpose of a diaper shirt?What are they for?
This is not a onesie or bodysuit. Just a light cottony and airy vest that snaps in the front. They have been around for many years but I never knew their purpose and did not know they were called diaper shirts.

A diaper shirt is a shirt that snaps in the front and is general pretty thin. You would put your baby in it if you wanted them to be cool but have something on besides their diaper.

These are generally not the same as onesies as they do not snap closed at the bottom.

Why not just make one out of the free plastic Wal Mart bags? You can borrow TT Pablo Diablos elmers glue and tack on some sequins and stuff...!
