What kind of fabric should I use to make a teddy bear?

I want to make a stuffed bear for a friend of mine who is in the hospital, but I'm not sure what kind of fabric would work best. Any suggestions?

Polyester fleece (like Polartec) is easy to find, easy to sew, and washable. Some is even a little "furry". That would be my first suggestion.
