Is this normal for a 2 1/2 year old?

This may be a little gross, but I am really concerned. I have a 2 1/2 year old son who poops out huge pieces of food. I was told it was normal when he was younger, but now that he is 2 1/2 is it still normal. I'm worried that he is not digesting most of his food and not getting the nutrients he needs from it. I watch him chew up his food pretty well, but I still see huge pieces of lettuce, whole beans, corn, mango, apple, and pretty much anything we eat. I even see whole pieces of shredded chicken in his diaper a lot. It's never like normal poop. There is always big pieces of food left in it. He also has very low muscle tone and is very weak a lot. Could this all be a sign he may not be digesting food correctly?

Take him to the doctor.

Everyone's body is different and processes food differently, however, as a general rule, some of those foods should NOT be coming out whole. You say that he has low muscle tone and is weak--these are all things that you MUST bring to his doctor's attention.

In the meantime, try cutting his food up smaller and continue to monitor his chewing. But, do take him to the doctor as soon as you can. What is "normal" for one child is not always "normal" for another.
