It's not just about carrying your stuff. The right tote, clutch or hobo can transform an outfit, while a misguided choice only detracts from fabulous attire.

Old-school rules

Like sunglasses, totes have been expanding to gargantuan proportions but sporting an oversized tote makes anyone under six feet resemble a bag lady. The proportion is wrong. If you insist on going super-sized, turn your bag into a statement and team it with no-frills clothes. Totes and satchels work best with voluminous clothes such as maxi dresses and flares, while little sundresses, minis and evening gowns require dainty clutches.
