Could I use a weekend bag instead of a diaper bag?

I have been searching and searching for a diaper bag I like, but I'm not having any luck. This is my first child so I am not familiar with diaper bag styles. Could I use a weekend bag instead? Or are there special compartments in a diaper bag that I will find useful?
